Description:
The opera "The Night of the Neurotic" is a short work that premiered in Milan in 1960. A trade fair in Milan is overflowing with people. A man who cannot sleep when he hears noises rents out three rooms on the top floor of a hotel, but the hotel staff puts a veteran and a newlywed couple on either side of him, which leads to slapstick. The singers must not only sing, but also give excellent performances. On the other hand, the opera "Two Shy Men" is a comedy about a love affair. The two operas by Nino Rota were among the highlights of the 2017 Reate Music Festival. Although best known as a film music composer, Rota himself aspired to be a classical composer and was well versed in the Italian operatic tradition, studying the works of Rossini, Verdi, and Puccini. He composed more than 10 operas during his lifetime, and several of his operas, including "The Florentine Straw Hat," have been performed, but this is the first time that they have been made into a film. The same singers, Celenza and Cortese, sing two different roles in two different productions, a pattern that creates some commonality in the stories of different characters in this brilliant production.
