Description:
Chouryonis was active in Lithuania during the 19th and 20th centuries. During his lifetime, he was known more as a painter than as a composer, so much so that Stravinsky once owned one of his paintings. As a composer, he left behind many fantastic works reminiscent of his own paintings, in the tradition of Romantic composers such as Schumann and Chopin, and in his later years he even created some works without tonality. This album contains his piano pieces arranged for solo harp by Joanna Downeate. The simple melodies reminiscent of folk songs are given a more romantic flavor by the sound of the harp. This is a disc that will bring a new charm to Chouryonis's works. Joanna Downeate is a Lithuanian-born harpist. She studied at the Geneva Academy of Music and the Amsterdam Conservatory, where she won prizes in many international competitions and was active as a soloist. Currently, she is dedicated to the promotion of harp music and Lithuanian music. Naxos Japan
