The Balinese mythological creature Barong is a panther-like creature believed to be the king of the spirits, leader of the hosts of good and the enemy of Rangda, the demon queen and mother of all spirit guarders in the mythological traditions of Bali. His appearance is depicted in various animal-like guises, and the most revered of all is the figure of a four-legged or two-legged creature with the head of a lion.
Etymologically the word "Barong" comes from the Sanskrit word "Bharwang", meaning Bear. Another opinion states the "Barong" comes from the word "Baruang", meaning "Two Rooms"
