Background

Enthusiasts of the classic Porsche 964 Turbo aim to tune their cars with style, preserving the original aesthetics that define this iconic sports car. The intercooler, a highly visible component in the engine bay, and sadly the appearance has often been a point of compromise for most aftermarket units. Many aftermarket options with their boxy looking sheet metal tanks detract from the car's elegance. Furthermore, a critical piece missing from all the aftermarket solutions is the air guide. This component, mounted atop the original intercooler, directs airflow through the core for efficient cooling—a detail surprisingly overlooked in most aftermarket designs, leading to inefficient cooling as the air bypasses the core.

Our Solution

In designing the MERA version of our intercooler for the Porsche 964 Turbo, do88 aimed to retain the stock appearance while significantly enhancing performance. Our intercooler promises a substantial increase in cooling efficiency and a reduction in pressure drop, outperforming both the original and most aftermarket alternatives. We chose a Bar & Plate core from Garrett Motorsport, known for its exceptional performance. The core's thin, densely packed fins ensure effective heat transfer, and its 80 mm thickness maximizes the cooling potential without compromising the design of the original tanks and air guide.
We believe our do88 MERA intercooler stands as the best performance upgrade available, perfectly balancing exceptional performance with the desire to maintain the Porsche 964 Turbo's classic engine bay look. It is an ideal choice for high-power builds, meticulously designed to replicate the original's mounting points, air guide, hose connections, and sensor locations. We used an intercooler from the highly exotic Porsche 964 Leichtbau as the blueprint for all shapes and dimensions.

Installation

Designed for seamless integration, our intercooler fits all 3.3L and 3.6L Porsche 964 Turbos. Given the hand-built nature of these cars, adjustments of intercooler bracket position might be necessary to achieve the perfect fit. Luckily the OE intercooler brackets gives room for adjustment which was probably needed already from production line as the shape of the OE intercoolers that we seen during this development process have been varying a bit. However, these adjustments are minimal, ensuring that owners can upgrade their cooling system without compromising the car's classic appearance or the integrity of the installation process. Replacing the OE intercooler or any other aftermarket intercooler with ours reinstates the car's esteemed appearance while providing a noteworthy upgrade in performance, embodying the perfect balance between preserving tradition and embracing innovation.
