On the southern boundary of Coonawarra is the old Penola cricket ground, which first saw a ball bowled in anger and the flashing cover drives of local champions in 1950.Jim Barry always had an affection for Coonawarra and the region's fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon fruit, so when the property went on the market, the opportunity to transform it into a vineyard was too good to miss. To preserve a little piece of Coonawarra cricketing history, the original pavilion was retained and the vines were planted around the cricket pitch.

Country of Packing: Australia.

History: Founded in 1959, Jim Barry Wines is still family owned, with three generations of Roseworthy graduates. Jim's son Peter became managing director in 1985 and today Peter's children Tom, Sam and Olivia are the winemaker, commercial manager and brand ambassador respectively. Voted '2020 Winery of the Year' at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards they produce highly acclaimed and award-winning wines.

Tasting notes: The wine has a vibrant crimson colour and a bouquet loaded with robust blackcurrant, plum, and cassis, underlined by subtle hints of smoky oak, dried herbs, and turned earth. The palate is generous with red and blackcurrant fruit, hints of liquorice and tobacco, and soft, silky tannins that lead to a harmonious finish.

Alcohol by volume: 14%.

Units: 10.5 units per 750ml bottle.

Producer: Jim Barry Wines is a key name in Australian wine history, founded in 1959. Jim Barry was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley and helped establish the region as a benchmark producer of world-class wines. The winery was named Winery of the Year in 2020 by the Halliday Wine Companion and is still family-owned. The grapes are sourced from the old Penola cricket ground in Coonawarra, which was purchased by Jim Barry in 1997. The wine is fermented in stainless steel fermenters and then matured for 12-19 months in French oak barrels to develop a rich and complex flavour profile.

Serving suggestions: A great accompaniment to a classic shepherd's pie.

Winemaker: Tom Barry & Derrick Quinton.

Vinification details: All harvesting decisions were based on tasting the fruit in the vineyard. The grapes were crushed and destemmed before fermentation in stainless steel fermenters with heading down boards, which submerge the skins in the fermenting must. This moderates the temperature of the fermenting skins or 'cap' while gently extracting colour, flavour and tannins. Pump-overs were conducted twice per day with a rack and return taking place daily during the early stages. Fermentation lasted seven to 10 days before being pressed. Malolactic conversion took place in tank before the wine was racked to French oak for 12 months' maturation.
