Description:
Kate NV, the solo project of Kate Shilonosova, a multi-hyphenate artist who skillfully crosses between experimental and pop music, has been steadily gaining recognition with each release. Kate NV's fourth full-length album since her 2020 masterpiece "Room for the Moon" is finally complete. This is a stunningly pleasing work that brilliantly abandons the conventional format of his own songs and breaks down the experience of musical time into ecstatic fragments, reaching even greater heights. Includes the first lyrics written by Food Festival a.k.a foodman! WOW" is Kate Shilonosova's fourth full-length album in her six-year career as Kate NV and the third release on RVNG Intl. Her prolific musical output is matched by a highly developed aesthetic sense and a deep commitment to visual world-building. This album, WOW, is one of many worlds where the music is completely saturated with color and deeply tactile and textured. It is shiny, spongy, and plastic. Whereas Room for the Moon embraced structure (in the abstract) and leaned toward pop, WOW happily abandons conventional song forms, breaking down the experience of musical time into ecstatic fragments. It is difficult to imagine a more appropriate album title for this work than "WOW".There is no clear etymological connection between the pure exclamation, the organic pitch of joy that comes out of her mouth. In "Room for the Moon," Kate's voice was layered, lyrical, and melodic with urgency, but in this work, she peeks around the corner and emits to her surroundings in a language that is not verbal and definitely not human. Instead of using lyricism, she goes outside of language and rewards us with a succession of colorful, gumball-machine-like emitted textures. The carbonation of the soda, the teeth of the spring, and the bits and pieces of the petite are comically gigantic, as if heard from an insect's point of view. The words are appetizing pops, onomatopoeias, percussive chirps, and little jokes, and the songs function as another form of what she calls "funny little sounds. WOW tilts and sways, stumbles over its own feet, laughs at itself, plays deliberately out of tune, and leans and leans like a weighted flower. She is a longtime user of the Broken Orchestra sample pack from Found Sound Nation (a creative agency that uses music production to bring people together across cultural and social divides), and has used the 1,000 He uses a sound catalog of more than 1,000 aging instruments sourced from Philadelphia public schools. These complete and incomplete instruments are firmly pieced together in the patchwork of "WOW," a reworked clarinet, flute, and marimba fragment played by a friend of the synthesizer and a government lady. It is central to the album's internal logic, which ignores what is a sentence or a song and what is not broken, and it is a mixture of subject and object, with a firmly New Wave sensibility. (1/2)
