Laut den Erinnerungen Ozzy Osbournes habe Tony Iommi, der auch die Produktion des Albums übernahm, die Weisung ausgegeben »man müsse mehr wie Foreigner oder Queen klingen!«. Was den eh schon schlecht gelaunten Osbourne fortan mit Gedanken an den Band-Ausstieg versah.

In England war gerade die Punk-Revolution ausgebrochen, als Heavy-Metal-Act fühlte man sich orientierungslos. Im benachbarten Studio in Miami nahmen The Eagles ihr Album »Hotel California« auf, aber nur im Gebrauch von Kokain fand man eine Gemeinsamkeit. Das entstandene musikalische Resultat fasste das britische Magazin MOJO trefflich zusammen: »Technical Ecstasy is the sound of Sabbath trying to make a grown-up, radio-friendly rock record and, in some parts, it works!«. Das Cover der Graphik-Agentur Hipgnosis hingegen wurde legendär. Auf die Bedeutung angesprochen, meint Osbourne: »two robots screwing on an escalator!«
