A large and decorative pair of Meissen porcelain vases, of ancient Roman krater form, with handles shaped as entwined serpents (Schlangenvasen)
Germany, mid-19th century.
Why we like them
Highly ornamental, these vases represent an interesting combination of the restrained, classical form, and the exuberant Renaissance-revival decoration with rich cobalt-blue and gold. Perfect for lamp conversion.
Marked with crossed swords with dotted hilts in underglaze blue and Pressnummer A 148
Linked with the earth, snakes were associated with chthonian powers, and the Greeks and Romans regarded them as guardians of sacred places, houses, and tombs. A marble urn with similar serpent handles is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Restorations to handles.
