The Prince and the Pauper, set in 1537, was first of Twain's histoical novels and was inspired by Charlotte Yonge's Little Duke (1854), which Twain found in his sister-in-laws's library at Quarry Farm. The American edition was published after the UK and Canada editions.

he Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain is a historical novel set in 16th-century England that tells the story of two boys who look exactly alike but come from very different worlds. One is Tom Canty, a poor beggar living in London, and the other is Prince Edward, the future King Edward VI. When they meet and switch places out of curiosity, each is forced to experience the hardships and realities of the other’s life. Through this adventure, Twain explores themes of social injustice, compassion, identity, and the importance of understanding others, while also offering a vivid and engaging picture of Tudor society.
