Krenek, Ernst (1900-1991)
Description:
Kuchenek is an Austrian-born composer. He studied under Schreker at the Vienna Academy of Music and was married for a time to Mahler's second daughter, Anna (they divorced less than a year later), during which time he was commissioned by his mother-in-law, Alma, to compose Mahler's Symphony No. 10. However, because of his Czech heritage, he was persecuted by the Nazi regime and fled to the United States during World War II. He established himself as a music teacher and continued to produce works as well as nurture many younger students, and he passed away at the age of 91. This album contains a variety of his early works, from "Potpourri" (when he was just beginning to be influenced by jazz) to "Pallas Athene" (when he established his own style, making full use of twelve-tone instruments). The world premiere recording of "Tricks and trifles" is also a must-hear. Naxos Japan
